How To Make It In America | Michael Pino of Acropolis

SS: First off, tell us a little bit about yourself and introduction of the brand.

Michael: My name is Michael and I’m the owner of Acropolis.  I started the brand in LA in 2007 and Acropolis is now carried throughout the country as well as in Australia, Europe and Asia with new doors opening regularly.

Acropolis promotes positivity, enlightenment, progress and individualism while fusing the past with the present.  Each collection has a distinct theme and each piece within each collection reflects that with a story or meaning to it.

SS: Acropolis has a pretty distinct brand image and direction, tell us a little bit about how you developed both.

Michael: It has definitely been a process and a result of trial and error as well as conceptual growth and evolution but we have found our own lane and can honestly say there is nothing quite like Acropolis.

My personal passion for the classics and streetwear, coupled with being a history major has influenced the concept of the brand.  In terms of direction, most of the time I will create the upcoming season’s concept with specific, detailed design description, concept, pertinent historical information, etc and let the design team do what they do best.  In some cases, they will present me with great concept and we’ll go from there.  It’s a good balance.

A few other brands also incorporate historical ideology and concept but in a much more dark and raw look and feel.  Not saying that in a negative context mind you, these are actually some of my personal favorite brands, but Acropolis’ message and look is unique.

SS: We’ve come across many brands that we didn’t think had a fitting name, how important is the brand’s name and how did you go about choosing yours?

Michael: Our brand name encompasses exactly what the ideology of the brand is and what we wish to convey.  The name Acropolis represents the underlying historical theme of the brand ans is used as a metaphor for greatness; Acropolis embodies the glory, power and splendor of an advanced society at its pinnacle.

Sitting atop the center of Western Civilization’s foundation, Acro (highest) polis (city) literally translates to: Highest City.  As the birthplace of democracy, the Acropolis helped lead to the free thinking and individualism we enjoy in the world today.

SS: Acropolis has remained consistent season to season and that’s one of the things we like about the brand, how difficult is it to stay in your own lane and not try to fall for trends?

Michael: For the first few years, we were trying different things, going in different directions, etc.  Once we collectively re-evaluated exactly what we needed to do to fully encompass the brand’s concept with the correlating aesthetic things have taken off.  We’re to the point now where it comes naturally.

A lot of people like to say they don’t follow trends, but at the same time you need to be conscience of the marketplace and keep your finger on the pulse.  That doesn’t require jumping on the latest bandwagon but it helps guide the brand in the right direction.

SS: What types of things have you done to get people interested in the brand and its image?

Michael: As first, and for a while when it was just a start-up, we really grew by word of mouth, friends and hitting the streets.  That led to tradeshows, selling through Karmaloop Kazbah and other drop-ship accounts, sales agencies, and new avenues opened up from there.

We have steadily grown since and been fortunate enough to collaborate with other brands we respect, artists and music labels like Duck Down, charitable ventures like the Wounded Warrior Project as well a future projects in the works.

SS: We’re seeing a lot of brands that are looking to jump straight to selling without telling their story and developing an image for themselves, what advice would you give those types of brands?

Michael: That’s a difficult path.  What do they present unique, what sets them apart, why would someone be drawn to their product…these are all basic but vital questions one must ask themselves to ensure their brand isn’t one of the countless brands doing the same recycled things so often seem in streetwear.

SS: How has Acropolis evolved or changed over the years in terms of the brand’s direction?

Michael: We’ve grown into our own aesthetic that people have really taken to and it’s great to hear the positive feedback.  The right design team, the right sales team, working with great press outlets like Swag Syndicate have all helped to grow the brand, fuel the buzz, demand and success of the brand.

SS: What advice would you have for new brands that are trying to find their direction or image?

Michael: Understand that this is an uphill battle, be prepared to learn through your wallet, be thick skinned, realize people are out for themselves and keep your circle tight, beware of people and companies trying to scam you, short you or do bad business.

Be wise allocating your funds, surround yourself with hard working, driven people who share your vision, keep your focus, work harder than the next, if you have a vision follow it and create something that you can be proud of, something unique and quality and realize that things do no happen overnight.

Please introduce yourself and tell us a little about Epic?

My name is Ted, 37 years old and the owner of Epic, an independent sneaker and streetwear boutique in Breda, The Netherlands.

What is the biggest trend you’re feeling in streetwear currently?

Pocket tees!!  I’m a sucker for those!!  The more crazy the print on the pocket the better!!

The best thing about The Netherlands is..?

The open minded culture.  Always open to trying new things, not only in life but in clothing and footwear as well.  I live in the south of The Netherlands and what I especially like about this part of the country is the warm-hardheartedness of people.

What is it about Acropolis that you like?

I am really drawn to the clean designs and the unique story behind the brand!  I love the thought and meaning incorporated into the design.

What is something that you would like to see make a return in streetwear?

I grew up in the 90′s so I have fond memories of wearing Starter gear from my favorite teams, and this style is already makeing a comeback.  Other than that, bring back the Polo long-sleeves!!  The Helly Hansen jackets, Natutica, Polo, etc!!  That preppy, sailing look, those were the days for me.

AF1′s or Jordan’s?

I’ve been collecting Jordan’s for years now, so that’s an easy question for me.  It all started for me when I was around 16 years old and my Dad brought me a pair of Jordan VI Infrareds back from a business trip to the USA.  I’ve been hooked ever since..

What brands are you wearing at the moment?

As a store owner, I believe that you have to stand behind the product you sell so I only wear the brands sold in Epic!!  This Spring it’s been Staple, Acapulco Gold, The Quiet Life and of course Acropolis!  They all have very strong collections in my opinion.  Besides those brands, I’m really into Japanese denim.  A rolled up selvedge denim is a killer look to go with your kicks.
